4 Simple Ways to Upgrade your Work Day

It’s that time again…the weekend is coming to an end and the Sunday scaries are kicking in. The carefree version of yourself is slipping away in anticipation of another hectic workweek.

Don’t fret…we’re here to help you tackle your Monday! Check out our tips below and learn how to upgrade your workday.

Evaluate your day-to-day.

  • Feeling overwhelmed by your work calendar? Do you have deadlines closing in and no idea how to get everything done in time? Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you’re only human. You need to know your limits and recognize when it’s time to ask for help.
  • Take a step back, prioritize your tasks and evaluate your workload. Make a feasible to-do list for the day starting with the most important items at the top. This may shed light on opportunities to shift tasks and deadlines or remove items altogether for a more manageable day-to-day. We all know how satisfying it is to cross an item off our list!

Remember, it’s okay to ask for help!

  • Delegate tasks where you can or ask a co-worker for help if you need it. Sometimes just bouncing an idea off colleagues or asking them to step in when you’re feeling stressed can make all the difference.
  • Stuck on something? Ask for clarification. If you’re getting conflicting feedback or direction, be upfront with your colleagues about your concerns and define what you need in order to complete your tasks. This will save everyone time and energy in the long run.

Take short breaks throughout the day to increase your productivity and focus.

  • Look at pictures of cute animals, like these adorable puppies from BuzzFeed. You’re welcome!
  • Get your blood pumping by taking a walk – Around the block, through the parking lot, up and down the stairs; anywhere will do.
  • Step away from the screen for some human interaction. Have a quick chat with a co-worker or give your mom a call.
  • Tidy up or rearrange your workspace a bit to feel refreshed and reinvigorated.
  • Take your lunch break away from your desk. Use your lunch hour to regain some lost energy, while enjoying the fruits of your meal-prepping labor.

Leave your work (and work stress) at work.

  • Try to restrict your work to specific times and places. It’s best to leave your work at the office and make an effort to stick to your work schedule. If you do work from home, make sure it’s in a dedicated space and intentionally carve out a starting and ending time. Otherwise, your work and personal life will bleed into one another along with any stress that may come with it.
  • Consciously turn off your work brain by performing an end-of-day ritual. It’s best if it’s something relaxing, like listening to your favorite podcast on your commute or hitting the gym. Whatever it is for you, this habit will help you to unwind and decompress before you even get home.
  • Develop better out-of-office tactics to keep your work from creeping into your personal time. Turn off email notifications or put your work phone away when you’re not in the office so you don’t have the urge to check in all night long or while on vacation.

Keep calm and refer to these tips next time you feel like you’re stuck in a work rut. You got this!
